Dr. Matthew Leese
Co-Artistic Director, St. Andrews Arts Council and the NewBEMF. Conductor, Early Music Community ChoirMatthew Leese is known as a versatile baritone, conductor, director, and teacher. He has founded three critically acclaimed ensembles, including the professional ensemble Gravitación. His extensive solo and ensemble performing experience in the USA, New Zealand, Canada, Asia and Europe includes numerous recital and oratorio credits, as well as lead roles in La Calisto, Dido and Aeneas, l’Euridice, Venus and Adonis, and Cephale et Procris. As a director, Matthew has led productions of L'incoronazione di Poppea, The Fairy Queen, The Magic Flute, Venus and Adonis, Dido and Aeneas, Orpheus in the Underworld as well as Mozart’s Impresario and Cosi fan tutte, and is known for his expertise in period stage movement. Matthew holds a Doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois, the MM in Early Music from Indiana University, a GPDip in Historical Performance from the Longy School of Music and a MusBHons from the University of Otago in New Zealand. He serves on the Voice, Choral and Opera faculty at Millikin University and is Co- Artistic Director of the New Brunswick Early Music Festival and the St. Andrews Arts Council.
